We are here for you                   We care about you                  How can we help?

Due to the Coronavirus (Covid19) pandemic we are following instructions from the Church of England to maintain safety and social distancing. This means we will be holding no public worship, groups or meetings for the foreseeable future. Our Church Centre, including the Hall, is also closed. We can however stay in touch through social media, phone and doorstep deliveries.

If you would like us to pray for you, tell us about someone in need or help in any way we can, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We will be sharing prayer, worship and ideas for craft and messy church on our website and on our Facebook page.

Know that, throughout the coming days, weeks and months, we will be praying for you and keeping in touch any way we can.

Could you help a neighbour? Share a blessing? Pray for NHS staff and local schools? Telephone a friend? It is at a time like this when we can realise that WE ARE THE CHURCH and we are THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD in a time of dark clouds.

The words of Jesus remind me that God is here for us, whether we are isolated at home, shopping in a supermarket or caring for someone who is unwell:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”. (John 14:27)

My thoughts and prayers are with you. May God bless you, keep you safe and give you his peace.

David (Vicar)

About us

We are a church of about 130 members from a wide range of ages and backgrounds, united by our faith in Christ.

Around half our members live in Greenham; others live elsewhere in Newbury or beyond.

St Mary’s is the (Church of England) Parish Church for Greenham, with members from a variety of church backgrounds.

Our vision is to be a church where we:

  • Know we are all loved by God and love one another.
  • Encounter the living God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • Know Jesus and make him known.
  • All are encouraged to know our gifts and grow together as Christians.
  • Can transform our community with acts of loving service and prayer.
  • Are all enabled and equipped to live out our faith daily, whatever our age or circumstances.

We believe the Bible to be God’s word, and seek to live by its teaching.

We also believe God is alive and active through the Holy Spirit and that spiritual gifts, including healing, are for today.

We welcome visitors and new members.  Please speak to a member of the Welcome Team if you would like more information or contact David (Vicar) on 01635 33828.

Advice regarding Coronavirus

We are currently following Church of England and Government guidelines for all Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. This means that we are only able to hold services with a minimum of people and we are putting social isolation into practice.  The latest advice and information can be found here.

We would love to talk over what we can offer, whether a special service, prayer for you at this time or alternative dates.

Baptisms & Christenings

You can be baptised at any age.  The baptism of children is traditionally called a “christening”. During the christening your child will be baptized. It’s the first step of an amazing journey with God, parents, godparents, friends, family and the church. You don’t have to have been christened (baptized)  yourself and you don’t have to be a regular churchgoer.  If you are considering being baptized or would like to be explore what a baptism service could mean for your child, please get in touch. We would love to meet with you to chat about possibilities.

Further information on christenings can be found  here

Thanksgiving for a child
A special church service, different from a christening, can be used as a way to say thank you to God for your child.
It is called a Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child and you can view the words of this service just here
It’s possible to have this service instead of a christening if you decide that now isn’t the right time to have your child baptized. Or, you could even have the Thanksgiving service as well as a christening.
You might also choose this service when your baby is just born, or if you have adopted a child into your family and you want to celebrate this with special words said by a minister in church.
Whatever the reason, we will be delighted to talk to you about this service.

Weddings & Blessings

Marrying in church can be as personal, meaningful and spiritual as you want it to be.

If you live in Greenham or have a connection with Greenham Church you can get married at St Mary’s. Every year we meet people who didn’t realise how easy it would be. You don’t have to be a regular churchgoer, or Christened, for example. If you have been divorced it may be possible to marry at St Mary’s or have a Marriage Blessing (a service of Prayer and Dedication after a Civil Marriage). We are happy to talk through what options are available.

Churches are special places and there are some things about a church wedding that you just can’t get anywhere else. Only in church can you say the vows which have stood the test of time and been said from one generation to the next. With our help you can blend ancient tradition and your own personal choices and style to create a celebration with true meaning and lasting impact.
There are rules of course, because marriage is a serious business with legal consequences. We can use the rules to make your dream day possible – we’ve done it many times. We always adapt the marriage service to make the occasion special for you. We would be happy to talk though what you are looking for and what we can offer you.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to find out more. We are here for you.

We’re  here to help you through one of life’s most difficult times.
A Church of England funeral is available to everyone, giving support before, during and after the service, for as long as it’s needed.

Christians believe that when we put our trust in Jesus,  God promises that when we die we will be with him in a wonderful place where death and pain are gone forever. Whatever the circumstances of death these words of hope can be a great comfort to those who attend a funeral at St Mary’s or West Berkshire Crematorium.

If you live in the parish, or if you have a link to St Mary’s, we are happy to explore with you how we may be able to help with their funeral. Whether you are considering a funeral in church or at the crematorium, we can offer a personal service to reflect the  unique personality and life experience of your loved one. Whether you are celebrating their life or saying goodbye, a Church of England funeral allows you to give thanks for the unique person you knew and loved in a way that gives comfort and hope. You are able to choose music, songs or hymns, bible verses and other readings, and prayers if you wish. We also encourage you to share some words about your loved one, which you, a family member, friend or the minister may read. We are happy to discuss any wishes you have regarding the service.

Whatever your link to the person who has died, we are available for you afterwards. Whether the funeral has happened recently or many years ago, you can discover the different ways in which we are here for you.
